Regulated profession
The legal profession in France is regulated by the following texts: Law No. 71-1130 of 31 December 1971 reforming certain judicial and legal professions, Decree No. 91-1197 of 27 November 1991 organizing the legal profession, the National Internal Rules (RIN) and the Internal Rules of the Paris Bar (RIBP).
Attorneys are bound by absolute professional secrecy (Article 66-5 of the Law of 31 December 1971).
Consumer mediation
In accordance with Articles L.612-1 and following of the French Consumer Code, in case of dispute arising from the performance of a service, the consumer client may, after attempting to resolve the dispute directly, refer the matter free of charge to the Consumer Mediator of the legal profession.

Fees
In accordance with Article 10 of the Law of 31 December 1971, fees are freely set between the attorney and the client. A fee agreement is established for each case, in accordance with Article 11.2 of the National Internal Rules.
In matters of police custody or emergency, the terms are specified during the first contact. Legal aid may be requested under the resource conditions provided by Law No. 91-647 of 10 July 1991.
